Hairstylists the globe over look forward to the annual Goldwell Global ColorZoom competition. Held in exotic locations around the world that change each year, ColorZoom attracts the creme de la creme in the global hairdressing industry. In 2017 Lynden Mason, Executive Director of Vivo Hair & Beauty, attended the event in Barcelona, Spain, and left the multi-day competition both impressed and inspired. “ColorZoom is one of the truly international colour competitions, and as such, is one of the ways for New Zealand stylists to showcase their skills on a world stage.

“ColorZoom is one of the truly international colour competitions, and as such, is one of the ways for New Zealand stylists to showcase their skills on a world stage.”

Last year it was two Vivo stylists who won both the Creative Colourist and New Talent categories in New Zealand. They then flew to Barcelona - entrants from 49 countries put forward their most talented to compete for the titles on offer. Lynden reflects enthusiastically, “The most exciting thing was the work created by New Zealand stylist’s proved itself to be at the cutting edge of creativity in the worldwide hair industry.”

Naturally, Vivo was excited to enter their best creative talent for the Goldwell ColorZoom competition again in 2018. And rightly so - Vivo Hair & Beauty made a clean sweep of the top ten spots, taking out the whole competition in NZ. This year, Vivo’s Bethany Lane Noa won the Creative Colourist category and Nina Williams won the New Talent category.

What has helped Vivo stylists become so successful in this globally reputed competition? “Foremost, Vivo stylists act as a team, as a family. We support each other, help each other, and share knowledge to allow people to achieve their professional ambitions.” Lynden also believes that because Vivo is not a franchise, and has a central infrastructure which takes care of all of the salons’ administration, stylists are left to indulge in what they truly love doing - creating beautiful, amazing, artistic hair. Lynden and co-owner James Carlisle are passionate about developing stylists’ to be the best they can be. “Our team is continuously offered opportunities to upgrade their skills and hone their talents. We invest education, money and time in all of our staff.”

It’s clear that the guys practice what they preach. Any stylist across Vivo’s 80 salons is encouraged to submit their work into hair competitions such as the Goldwell ColorZoom competition, and Vivo covers all of the cost of the products used and time off required for competition dates. They recruit (and pay for!) the top photographers, stylists and makeup artists to help complete the look for each Vivo staff member’s submission, meaning the competitors get to experience the excitement and pride of presenting their work looking its absolute best into this global competition. But it’s not just about the external factors. “One of the most important differences for our team is that they are free to express and create their own vision, without any scrutiny or rigidity,” says Lynden. “They are completely free to explore their own creativity.

This year’s Goldwell Global ColorZoom competition will be held in Toronto, Canada, and the two Vivo winners are counting down the days until they can take part in this incredible experience. Lynden knows why. “The energy, excitement and professionalism, and not to mention the size, means that Goldwell’s ColorZoom Competition really is one of the most prestigious events on the calendar for hairstylist’s around the world. We are proud of not only the two stylists who will be representing us in Toronto, but also so proud of the rich and diverse culture of creativity shown by all of our Vivo stylists.”
